Protect Your Forehead
The forehead protector headbands worn by most shinobi are engraved with the symbol of their Hidden Village and serve as a sign of pride and fealty to their hometown. Of course, not every shinobi is compelled to wear theirs on their forehead, despite the name - these headbands have been worn as hair bands, as bandanas, as a makeshift eye-patch, around the neck, on the upper arm, on the chest, on an undershirt, as a belt, and... on a gourd. Someone tell Gaara that when we use the word "gourd" to mean "head," we're not being literal!
You can wear this Hidden Leaf Village anywhere you like, though it really does work best as a headband. But hey, how you want to show your loyalty to the village is really up to you. Even if that means putting a headband on a gourd... we guess.
